Tips for Travel with Celiacs

When we faced the Celiac diagnosis, we still wanted to enjoy travel together.   We would like to share tips for how to successfuly travel.

Why Travel

We think it is important to explore the world around you! Don't be afraid to go new places. Start small at first and go to areas around you first. Findmeglutenfree is a great website for that initial website.

Living Gluten-Free

Cross-Contamination

One of the trickiest things to navigate is cross-contamination.  Part of this is because of the popularity of the gluten-free diet for health reasons. Because of this, not all restaurants understand the importance for Celiac’s of cross-contamination.

What We Avoid

1. Shared Fryers. This is a question we ask the server every time when we come in to a restaurant. Sometimes even places that had a dedicated fryer change as they update their menu. This means that even if they list fries or tortilla chips as gluten-free, there is a high chance for cross-contamination.
2. Pasta Dishes: Unless the place is dedicated gluten-free, this is a place that cross-contamination can occur due to reusing pasta water, pots and pans as well as strainers in the process.
